Floors & Fix supplies and fits laminate flooring across Putney — upper floors of Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis in West Putney, and ground-floor rooms where moisture readings allow. Fixed price on the day, door trimming included, and full uplift of your existing floor.
Putney's housing stock is overwhelmingly Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis stretching back from the Thames and Upper Richmond Road, with a high proportion of conversion flats in the terrace belt. Modern riverside developments along the Thames offer new-build flats with screed subfloors and underfloor heating. The vast majority of pre-1920 properties have suspended timber ground floors.
68% 68% of Putney households are in flats or maisonettes, reflecting the area's high proportion of Victorian terrace conversions — making acoustic underlay requirements and leasehold consent standard considerations for any hard flooring installation. — ONS Census 2021 — Wandsworth dwelling type profile
Laminate is best suited to Putney's upper floors and to ground-floor rooms in Edwardian semis where subfloor moisture is within acceptable limits. In Victorian terrace ground floors — particularly in conversion flats where under-floor ventilation is restricted — we'll check moisture before specifying laminate; if readings are marginal we recommend LVT as a safer moisture-tolerant alternative. In West Putney Edwardian semis with larger room spans, we fit 12 mm AC4 laminate over 9 mm ply to get a floor with minimal flex and a solid sound. Putney conversion flat leaseholders should check acoustic clauses before choosing laminate over carpet; most upper-floor leases require an acoustic underlay rated to at least 19 dB impact sound reduction.
The terraces between Upper Richmond Road and Putney Hill — Keswick Road, Norroy Road, Dealtry Road — are classic late-Victorian and Edwardian bay-fronted properties. Suspended timber ground floors throughout; joist depths typically 225 mm with reasonable under-floor ventilation where air bricks haven't been blocked. Chipboard overlays dating from the 1980s are common and require assessment before any hard floor installation.
Laminate suits the upper floors of Putney's terraces and the drier ground floors — but the deck comes first. We re-secure the chipboard, ply where the surface undulates, and float the boards on acoustic foam with proper expansion gaps so the floor stays flat through the seasons. AC4 minimum for living rooms; AC5 where the hallway takes the traffic.
A large proportion of Putney's Victorian terrace stock has been converted into two or three flats. Ground-floor flats often have limited under-floor ventilation and elevated moisture readings. Upper-floor flats — particularly first and second floors — have suspended timber with chipboard overlays that may be poorly secured. Leasehold acoustic requirements are almost universal in SW15 conversions.
A ground-floor SW15 conversion gets a hygrometer before it gets laminate: restricted underfloor ventilation in these flats swells an HDF core within seasons if the readings are ignored. Dry floors take ply, 19dB acoustic underlay and boards; borderline floors get a straight recommendation for LVT instead, in finishes that match.
The wider streets of West Putney — around Gwendolen Avenue, Oakhill Road, and the edges of Roehampton — contain larger Edwardian semis with more substantial joist spans. These properties frequently have 150 mm x 50 mm floor joists at 400 mm centres, which remain structurally sound but show movement across wider room spans. Full ply boarding is recommended before any rigid or click-lock floor product.
The 12mm AC4 board over 9mm ply is the West Putney specification — the extra stiffness matters across the wider Edwardian spans around Gwendolen Avenue, and the floor sounds solid rather than hollow underfoot. Doors, including original four-panel Edwardian ones, are trimmed with an undercut saw as part of the standard fit.
Modern apartment blocks along the Embankment and Putney Wharf have concrete-slab construction with cement screed or self-levelling compound finish and underfloor heating as standard. These properties are straightforward for hard flooring but require UFH-compatible products and a floating rather than glued installation to allow thermal expansion and heating system access.
Over the riverside blocks' heated screed, laminate works only from the approved lists: UFH-rated boards on underlay at or below 0.10 m²K/W, the tightest thermal limit of any floor we fit because laminate passes heat least readily. The combination is checked against the building's heating spec and put in writing on the quote.
Floors & Fix Fitting Team did an excellent job from start to finish. The team was professional, punctual, and paid great attention to detail throughout the installation. The flooring was fitted to a very high standard, and the finished result has completely transformed the space. They kept everything tidy, communicated clearly, and made sure every aspect of the job was completed perfectly. I would highly recommend Jon and the team to anyone looking for quality flooring work and reliable service.

It depends on the moisture readings. Victorian terrace ground floors in SW15 sometimes have elevated humidity under the boards. We take readings on every visit — if the subfloor is within spec, laminate is fine. If moisture is a concern, we'll recommend LVT instead.
For upper-floor Putney flats we use an acoustic underlay rated to at least 19 dB impact sound reduction, which satisfies the majority of standard lease acoustic clauses. We carry the relevant technical data sheet if your managing agent needs to approve the product.
A typical two-bedroom conversion flat — lounge, hallway, and two bedrooms — usually takes a full day including uplift, ply boarding if needed, fitting, and door trimming. We aim to leave every job with doors closed cleanly and all off-cuts removed.
Door trimming is included in every laminate quote. We use an undercut saw and trim all doors to clear the new floor level. In Victorian terraces with original ledged-and-braced doors we take extra care to maintain the door's integrity.
Laminate in a hallway depends on traffic levels and the subfloor condition. For a busy family hallway in a SW15 Victorian terrace, we often recommend AC5-rated 12 mm laminate or, if there's any moisture risk, LVT — which is completely waterproof and better suited to the entrance wear zone.
