Slough's housing stock runs the full gamut — 1940s ex-council semis in Langley, post-war concrete-base terraces in SL1 and SL2, trading-estate-edge new-build flats and Victorian semis in Burnham and Cippenham. Each property type hides its own subfloor conditions. We survey every room on the first visit and price accordingly, with no revisions on fitting day.
The 1940s–60s Langley semis were built on solid concrete ground floors and often have no damp-proof membrane by today's standards. We test for moisture with a calcium carbide meter, apply DPM treatment where readings exceed 75% RH and lay LVT glued direct — the most stable and waterproof option for this construction. Upstairs suspended timber floors take carpet on a quality 10mm underlay.
Much of central Slough's post-war terrace stock has thick screeded concrete throughout the ground floor and tight stair geometry with winder treads. We use thin-profile LVT (4.5mm) in hallways to avoid door-height issues, carry out ply boarding where screed surfaces are pitted or uneven, and fit a hard-wearing loop-pile carpet on stairs with correctly mitered half-landing returns.
The newer flatted developments around the Slough trading estate and along the A4 corridor typically have a concrete structural deck with developer-grade screed. Levelness varies significantly between rooms; we use a feather-finish levelling compound before any click-LVT or laminate installation to eliminate hollow spots and board flex that would void the product warranty.
Victorian semis in Burnham and the older streets of Cippenham have suspended timber ground floors with a ventilated void of 150–300mm — they flex and creak if flooring is laid directly on loose boards. We check for structural movement, punch down or replace protruding nails, overlay with 6mm ply where needed, then fit engineered oak or LVT on a solid, quiet base.
